Patient-Reported Nausea and Fatigue Related to Methotrexate: A Prospective, Self-Controlled Study in the ArthritisPower Registry

This study aims to quantify methotrexate (MTX)-associated side effects in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients. In the ArthritisPower app and registry, a self-controlled case series study design with electronic patient-reported outcome measures (e-PROMs) was used. Phase 1 involved a cross sectional study with adults with past or current oral MTX users while Phase 2 was a longitudinal study that focused on current MTX users. From these surveys, the researchers concluded that the majority of current users report side effects, including nausea/vomiting and fatigue, which are temporally related to weekly MTX dosing. They also discuss the value of digital remote patient monitoring in possibly improving medical adherence and outcomes.
